9 Quick, Easy, Micro-Habits for a Restorative Weekend

We often associate true relaxation with professional pampering or expensive spa days. While these experiences are fantastic, the cost and time requirements can make them difficult to enjoy regularly.

The key to sustained wellbeing is creating restorative habits we can experience regularly at home through small, intentional actions.

Relaxing with cup of tea

To build a new habit it helps to keep the bar for success low e.g. committing to just 5–10 minutes for yourself each Saturday you can begin to generate that relaxed, unplugged feeling, without the pressure of major time or financial commitments.

Below are nine transformative micro-habits to help you reclaim your peace and perspective:

1. Refresh Your Skin and Mind

You don't need a professional facial to feel rejuvenated. Try a five-minute facial mask at home. It's quick and easy, gives you a few moments to relax and clear your mind, and your skin feels so much happier afterwards.

2. Slow Down

Prepare a cup of your favourite beverage whether it is water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate or something else, and find a quiet spot to sip slowly and enjoy the moment.

3. Look Up for Perspective

When you feel overwhelmed, step outside and look at the sky. The everchanging artwork of clouds, rain, or sunshine offers immediate perspective, reminding us of the world's beauty and the potential for every day to be a new adventure.

4. Make Space for Spontaneity

As planners many of us restrict our minds to endless to-do lists. Instead, try sitting with only a blank notepad and a pen. Creating space, and being open to spontaneous thoughts, allows your best ideas to emerge.

5. Focus on Slow, Deep Breaths

Sustained stress can make our breathing shallow and difficult without us noticing. Intentionally taking a break to focus on slow, deep breaths helps the body release the physical stress it may be holding.

6. Dance (Really Go For It)

There is something uniquely liberating about dancing when you are alone. Embracing the "dance like no-one’s watching" philosophy, whilst genuinely knowing no-one is watching, allows you to experience moving with total freedom and joy.

7. Quality Time with Pets and Plants

Connecting with other living things is a powerful way to improve wellbeing. Spending quality time with pets or plants and caring for them is mutually beneficial and grounds you in the present moment with acts of love.

8. The "One Thing" Cleanse

Physical clutter can feel overwhelming. Choose one small area that has been bothering you such as a single drawer, a desk, or a corner of the kitchen, and clean it. You will likely find that as the area becomes cleaner and clearer, you feel lighter and calmer.

9. Escape into a Chapter

Books are an excellent tool for diverting attention and allowing the mind to recharge. By immersing yourself in the text you allow your imagination to bring the story to life.
